Borough of Croydon
If Croydon wasn't already a London borough it
would be a significant town in its own right. Formerly the largest town
in Surrey, it has a population of over 250,000. Croydon town centre is
the largest and busiest in south London and is also a major transport
hub,
though not everyone is fond of its high-rise office blocks. The borough
has other town centres within its boundaries, notably Purley and
Coulsdon.
Most of the borough is residential and much of it is high status and
expensive.
The borough abuts the North Downs and
encompasses
plenty of good rolling countryside on its boundary with Surrey, as well
as a number of large green spaces amongst the residential estates
(including
at least six golf courses, two farms, a couple of country estates and
many
areas of woodland). The London Outer Orbital Path passes through the
south
of the borough.
