Fairfield Horseshoe, 26th May 1987

My second visit to the Fairfield Horseshoe, on which Graham and I tackled the whole round, out and back from Ambleside.

We're doing the route anticlockwise, heading initially for Low Pike. This is the view from Sweden Bridge Lane above Ambleside, looking south over the town towards Windermere
From the same point we're looking across into Great Langdale
Ambleside and Windermere from higher along Sweden Bridge Lane.

Low Pike, with Windermere beyond, from High Pike.
The summit of High Pike (aka Scandale Fell), 2155ft.
High Pike is revealed as no more than a shoulder on the ridge, which now climbs onwards to Dove Crag.

Looking northeastwards across to Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes from Hart Crag.
Helvellyn and Striding Edge seen from Hart Crag
From Hart Crag it's a walk of about a kilometre to Fairfield, at 2863 ft the principal summit of this group.
View from the top of Fairfield; the shapely topknott of Cofa Pike nearby, and Striding Edge in the background.
Dollywaggon Pike, Nethermost Pike and Helvellyn, from the summit of Fairfield.
Looking down into Grizedale, with Cofa Pike to the right and Striding Edge in the background.
We continue anticlockwise around the ridge, heading for Great Rigg. This is the view towards Grizedale Tarn, with Dollywaggon Pike beyond.
One of my favourite shots - walkers on Nab Scar at the end of the ridge.

Further images will be added to this gallery at a later date.
