Aira Force, 27th May 1987

The 1997 Whitsun week holiday continues, and after strenuous climbs of Great Gable and the Fairfield Horseshoe we've given ourselves a day off from fellwalking and are visiting Aira Force. This waterfall, on the flanks of Gowbarrow on Ullswater's west shore, is owned and managed by the National Trust and is a famed beauty spot.

Foot of the falls

The glade at the foot of the fall is recessed and rarely sees sunlight, but it's a lovely enough spot.
